Our Story

Tel Aviv Rowing Club was founded in 1935 on the banks of the Yarkon River by Jewish rowers who fled Nazi Germany. Its founders had been members of the Jewish rowing club Ivria in Berlin. As the persecution of German Jews intensified, members of the club sought a way to leave the country and save their rowing boats as well.

In the early 1930s, a group of rowers managed to take the boats out of Germany under the pretext of travelling to a rowing competition in Barcelona. Instead of continuing to Spain, the rowers and their boats arrived in Mandatory Palestine. Some members of the group disembarked in Haifa, while others continued to Tel Aviv, where Tel Aviv Rowing Club was established on the banks of the Yarkon River as the first rowing club in Tel Aviv. Among the key figures in the club’s early years were Prof. Martin Hennig, Prof. Fischer and Prof. Victor Gottheiner.

New rowers may join after completing a course of at least eight lessons and demonstrating that they can row independently and safely.

The club is a member of the Israel Rowing Association and helps organize and run rowing competitions in Israel, including the Israeli Rowing Championships. Held annually, the championships bring together female and male rowers from rowing clubs throughout Israel, across age categories ranging from juniors to rowers aged eighty and above.

Promoting Rowing, Community and the Yarkon River

Club members work to promote both river and coastal rowing, in cooperation with neighbouring organizations and partners who share the river. Rowing activity extends for approximately 8 km, from the Seven Mills dam area to the mouth of the Yarkon River at the Mediterranean Sea, with a shared commitment to environmental responsibility and to protecting the river’s flora and fauna.

Since 1935, the club has continued the rowing tradition on the Yarkon — a tradition of sport, community and shared responsibility for the environment.
